Volkswagen revealed the all-new Touareg at a launch event in Munich. The second generation SUV is longer than its predecessor, but also lighter and lower for improved efficiency.
Significant aerodynamic work was undertaken to refine the design to achieve a lower Cd value. The front end styling, based on the new Volkswagen design DNA, results in a smaller frontal area and the new car sits 20mm lower than its predecessor. The new Touareg was also lightened by 208kg over the previous version, yet the body has five percent greater torsional rigidity.
The interior design remains virtually identical to that of the outgoing model, but the cabin has been made more functional and comfortable, with a host of technological additions. Rear seat passengers benefit from increased legroom and a bench that can be adjusted 160mm longitudinally. The seatback also reclines and, when folded, increases cargo space to 1642 liters.
The new Touareg will also be available with a hybrid drivetrain for the first time. The parallel hybrid system sees VW's V6 TSI powerplant mated with a 34kW 'E-Motor' for increased fuel economy and improved performance on- and off-road.
